THE WAY WE WERE

Memories like the corners of my mind

misty water color memories

of the way we were.

Scattered pictures

of the smiles we left behind,

smiles we gave to one another

for the way we were.

Can it be that it was all so simple then,

or has time rewritten every line,

if we had the chance to do it all again

tell me would we, could we?

Memories may be beautiful and yet,

what's too painful to remember

we simply choose to forget.

So it's the laughter

we will remember

whenever we remember

the way we were.

We, the Senior Class of 1981, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. David Whiting, in appreciation for all
his support as our class advisor.

We were fortunate to have associated
with such an outstanding person who
has a warm and affectionate personality.
From all of us, "Thanks for everything!"

1980 will long be remembered as the year football returned
to Methuen High. The Rangers, led by Coach Larry Klimas
and senior captains Mark Bardwell, Jim Graham, Mike
Jozokos, and Bob Manning, roared through the regular
season and finished 9-1, tying Lawrence for the MVC East
Championship. The squad just missed gaining a berth in
the Super Bowl, finishing 3rd in the Division II Eastern
Massachusetts Final Football Rankings. Highlights of the
season included a 12-0 win over archrival Andover in
which Methuen broke a 15-year jinx, and Thanksgiving
Day, when the Rangers defeated Dracut on a pass from
Jozokos to Ken Curley with under a minute to play. Elected
to the All-Star Team were Bardwell, Jozokos, Curley, Dave
Shaw, Eric Klimas, and Chicken St. Hilaire.

The Methuen High School Team, coached by Mike Sorter, continued its
winning ways in 1980. Led by senior captains Paul Lacroix, Mark Dufton, and
Steve O'Connell, the Rangers finished with a 10-4-2 record which was good
enough for 2nd place in the MVC East. The team also earned a trip to the State
Tournament. Contributing largely to the success of the team were League
All-Stars LaCroix, Dufton, O'Connell, Ken Atkinson, Gary Townsend and
Seniors Bob Lima and Jack Hammond.

The Methuen High Varsity Girls' Volleyball team,
coached by Mr. Don Smith, enjoyed an outstanding
season in 1980, winding up with a record of 13-5 and
earning a trip to the State Tournament. Led by tri-
captains Cathy Castles and All-League Performers
Cindy Donegan and Diane Arcidiacono, the girls
exhibited much hustle and spirit. Also contributing
to the the success of the team were seniors June
Marsden, Donna Contarelli, Deb Correlli, Beth

The Methuen High Girl's Cross Country
Team ran its way to a 7-1 season to finish
2nd in their division. The girls' one loss
was their first loss in three years. Many
of Coach Mike Hughes' girls enjoyed an
outstanding season. Senior captains
Sheilah Palumbo, and Alice Pennisi as
well as senior Cathy Burns provided the
leadership while Christine DiZogio, the
team's number one runner, finished
65th in the National AAU's. Most im-
proved Kathy McDermott and Sheila
Pepin also enjoyed a fine year. Accord-
ing to Hughes, "They are a great bunch
of girls and I was very proud of them.
The whole team was outstanding."

76

The Methuen High Boy's Cross Country
Team, coached by Roger Fuller, enjoyed a fine
season in 1980 by going 5-2 and finishing 3rd in
the MVC. Senior captain Tony Vicari, the only
senior on the squad, and underclassmen Jim
Donahue, Frank Lemieux, and Chris Cameron
were all voted to the MVC all-star team in
recognition of their fine season. Highlights of
the season included the state meet where
Donahue finished 6th, Lemieux 12th, and
Cameron 21st to give an impressive Methuen
showing. Cameron and Donahue both qual-
ified for the National AAU's with Cameron
finishing 12th in a very strong field and Dona-
hue finishing 59th. With three All-Stars return-
ing, Coach Fuller expects great things from his
1981 team.

The Methuen High Girls' Swimming Team, led by coach
Jim Manchester and senior co-captains Karla Kopcynski
and Nancy Padvaskas, swam their way to an 8-2 record and
a second place finish in the tough Greater Boston League.
Qualifying for the States were Padvaskas, Annemargaret
Connelly, Cindy Battye, and team MVP Terry Landry.
Senior Connelly was also voted to the Boston Globe A1I-

SPLISH!

The Boys' Swim Team had a tough dual meet season,
finishing the year at 1-7-1. They made up for all the
close defeats by finishing second in the League Cham-
pionships. Methuen was led by MVP and Captain
Richard Landry. Landry was the team's only repre-
sentative at Mass. States. Jack Hammond was the
team's Most Valuable Diver. Each of the guys im-
proved immensely, but Coach Jim Manchester felt that
George Blaisdell was the most improved swimmer.
Although six seniors are leaving, Capt. Richard Land-
ry, Paul Gagnon, Mike Cullem, Jack Hammond, and
Paul LaCroix, Coach Jim is hoping for a better season
next year.

The Boy's Varsity Basketball team, coached by
Bill Donlon, enjoyed another fine season in
1980, compiling a 18-4 record which was good
enough for a trip to the State Tournament. The
Rangers were led by Senior tri-captains Gary
McLain, Mike Jozokos, and Vinny Titone.
Elected to the All-Star Team were McLain,
Titone, and Big Man Wally Endyke. In addi-
tion, "V-Man" was voted MVP of the team and
the all-star game, where he scored 35 points in
a showcase of the league's best talent. He also
finished 2nd in the league in scoring with a 20
pt. average. Also contributing to the success of
the team were Gary Perusse and "the best sixth
man in the league", Mark Salvo.

The Ranger Girls had a hard year finishing at
8-6. Rookie Coach Michelle Lavoie felt it was a
rebuilding year and hopes that next year will
bring a championship team. The team was
paced by a great group of seniors; Capt. Diane
Arcidiacono, Capt. Debbie LTtalian, Capt.
Nancy Conley, and Diane Pelletier. The team
did it all when they upset previously undefeat-
ed Haverhill. For their outstanding talents
Diane Arcidiacono and Deb LTtalian were
voted to the MVC All Star-Team. At the
Awards Banquet Diane Arcidiacono was
named the team's MVP. The Most Improved

division and earning a trip to the state tournament. Led by Senior captains John Carroll and Jeff

success of the team were assistant captains Tony Vicari and Chris Brien, leading scorer Mike

The Girls' Gymnastics Team repeated for the
fifth consecutive year as MVC champions. The
team lead by seniors Sherri D'Urso, Captain
Pam Farley, Jeannie Gaumond, and Captain
Cyndi Donnegan; Junior Karla Pattavina and
Sophomore Cheryl Sprague, defeated pre-
viously undefeated Lowell for the MVC cham-
pionship and the right to hang another MVC
champion banner in the field house. For their
hard work and great skills, Karla Pattavina and
Pamela Farley were named to various All Star
Teams. Coaches Allen and Gaudian presented
three trophies at the awards banquet: MVP —
Karla Pattavina; MIP — Pam Farley; and
Coaches award — Sherri Durso.

FLOP!

"Hard work pays off" says Coach Molesso
after the Gymnastics team upset Revere
High for second place in the North Shore
Gymnastics League. Although the team has
seven seniors: Captain Chris Sullivan, Cap-
tain Dan Towler, Captain Mike Michaud,
Dave Spada, Mark Dufton, Steve O'Connell,
and Tim Cook, Mr. Molesso feels that next
year's team can only improve. The team
scored 109.8 points which happens to be the
7th highest score recorded in Massachusetts.
The team was paced by all stars Chris Sulli-
van (high bar), Dan Towler (high bar), Mike
Michaud (high bar and parallel bars), Nick
Dupuis (high bar and rings), and Dave Spa-
da (side horse). Coaches Molesso and Fran-
ciosa feel that this team surpassed their ex-
pectations from the beginning of the year.

87

The 1981 Ranger Wrestling Team suffered
through a hard-luck season, finishing 7-9.
The squad, coached by Brian Urquhart, exhib-
ited much desire and character that was not
shown in their record. Two bright spots in
the team were senior Captain Bob Merrill
and junior Dave DeSemone, who both qual-
ified for the states. Merrill provided a strong
performance, finishing 7th. Senior
heavyweight Bob Mullins also contributed to
the success of the team and provided lead-
ership.

■

SLOPE!

This year's ski team had a tough time,
they failed to win a meet. Coach Hurka
feels this was due to the lack of practice
and snow. The team was paced by Tri
Captains, Scott Vieweg, Debbie
Brooks and Laureen Kinsella, and
senior John Donigian. Dave Catania
was MVP and Donna Poulin (The
Jock!) received the coach's award. The
team's majority is underclassmen so
coach Hurka hopes for more snow and
victories next season.

89

The Girls Track Team under the guidance
of coach Daniel Moynihan and assistant
coach Doreen "Deadline" Devine finish 7-
2. The team was led by seniors, captain
Sheilah Palumbo, captain Alice Pennisi,
captain Lynn Messer, captain Monique
Wheeler, and Lori Despres. The team had
a great deal of outstanding performances
which include a second place finish in the
league meet and a 4th place finish in the
state meet.

Backed by some outstanding indi-

boys' track team finished 7-2 in the
MVC. Tri-captains Mark Bard well,

1980 state champs in the shot put,
never lost a dual meet as he set a new
school record in the event. Graham
ran his way to a Northern Area

This year's team finished the season with a 9-10 record
which placed them tie for fourth place in the Eastern

Berwick Trophy, having the highest batting average
(.420). First baseman Al Abraham was awarded the
Arold Trophy as the MVP, and outfielder Bob Gram
received the Coach's trophy for demonstrating im-

Coach Mimi Hyde-Stott feels that the
team had a very successful year finishing
13-3 in the regular season and 16-4 with
the state tournament losing to Saugus.
End of the season awards were pre-

Once again, a 14-2 record proved to provide the girls
with the MVC championship. Captains Cara Fascione
and Cyndi Donegan led the team all the way to the
quarter finals where they were eliminated by first seed
Marblehead. League All-Stars included Jodi Grillo (1st
singles, 6th in state individuals), Cara Fascione and
Marjorie Waks (1st doubles), and Kathy Hughes and
Lori Depres (2nd doubles, undefeated in league with
11-0 record.)

Coach Smith describes this year's team as having the
"best season ever." After compiling a 14-4 record, the
team qualified for the state tournament only to lose to
Gloucester in the first round 3-2. Methuen placed two
team members on the All-Conference team — Frank
Coco and Brian Feugill. Three others received honor-
able mention — Marty Cassidy, Scott MacDonald, and
Glenn Grillo.

NIKEY NUTS

The girls track team ran through its best season ever
finishing as MVC co-champions. This year marked the
first time the girls crushed the previously "unbeatable"
Billerica team. The team also finished as Class B State
Relay champs. Standout athletes on the team included
two state champs — Monica Baker (hurdles) and Cathy
DeCubellis (high jump). Monica also finished third in
the New Englands. This young team holds promise of
an even more exciting season next spring.

MORE NIKEY NUTS

After 30 consecutive wins, this season marked the first
defeat in a dual meet against Chelmsford. The boys still
finished 2nd place in the MVC with a 4-1 record. The
season marked 3 school records being shattered —
Mark Bardwell with a 56ft. toss in the shot, Dave Shaw
with a 219ft. throw in the javelin, and Mark Holden
with a 156ft. fling in the discus. The team ran up an
impressive record finishing 2nd in Class B, 4th in the
All-States (with 2 state champs, Bardwell and Shaw),
and Class B state relay champs. Shaw also finished 5th
in the nationals and 6th in the junior nationals.

Seniors (bottom row, L to R) — Joe Canzano, Bob Mullins, Dave Shaw, Mark Bardwell, Mike Jozokos, Mark

Dear Julie Flynn,

The Methuen High School Student Senate is informing you that you are a candidate for impeachment
under article VIII, section 7 of the Methuen High School Student Senate Constitution. The reason for this is
the violation of power during the week of March 16-20, 1981 . Our attention was brough to this by a number
of complaints from the student body and faculty. Impeachment hearings will take place on April 8, 1981.
This is ample time for you to prepare your defense.

Put yourself right in the middle
of the Battle of Bunker Hill.

Bunker Hill, June 17, 1775...
the first major battle of the
American Revolutionary War.
Now, more than 200 years
later, you can experience a re-
creation of that famous battle
at the Bunker Hill Pavilion,
located next to the U.S. S.
Constitution in Charlestown.

Sponsored by the Raytheon
Historical Foundation, the
Pavilion houses a multi-media
presentation, created by White
Oak Design, Inc., that vividly
re-creates the sights and sounds
of the conflict.

You'll be surrounded by
fast-moving panoramic images,
multi-directional sound and 22
life-size manikins in period
costume. And you'll relive the
drama and hear the words of

those who were actually there
that momentous day.

In 1976, the spotlight is on
America s past . . . and your
future.

Congratulations to
Methuen High School
Class of 1981
